‘Second wines’ are a bit of an insider secret. Savvy claret lovers know that these wines use grapes from the younger vines of top châteaux – so they’re great quality, but a fraction of the price of the top bottles. This is one such ‘second wine’, using the younger vines of top Cru Bourgeois property Château Ramage la Batisse – Lafite’s neighbour. It’s an Haut-Médoc, so it’s predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon which gives it a great tannic structure. But unlike typical clarets which are aged in oak, this is aged exclusively in stainless steel and concrete vats. It keeps the fruit flavours really bright and fresh – so it's packed with briar fruit flavours and woody spice. Youthful. Approachable. Richly fruity. It’s perfect for drinking now – and is delicious with grilled lamb chops. Savoury & Full Bodied.
